Sonic diaspora, vibrations and rhythm: thinking through the sounding of the Jamaican dancehall session
The propagation of vibrations may provide a better way of understanding diasporic spread than the conventional focus on the circulation of products (Hall 1980, Appadurai 1986, 1996, Gilroy 1993a, Brah 1996). Jamaican sound systems operate as a broadcast medium and a source of CDs, DVDs and other commercial products (Henriques 2007a). But the dancehall sound system session also propagates a broad spectrum of frequencies diffused through a range of media and activities - described as âsoundingâ (following Smallâs 1998 concept of âmusickingâ). These include the material vibrations of the signature low-pitched auditory frequencies of Reggae as a bass culture (Johnson 1980), at the loudness of âsonic dominanceâ (Henriques 2003). Secondly a session propagates the corporeal vibrations of rituals, dance routines and bass-line âriddimsâ (Veal 2007). Thirdly it propagates the ethereal vibrations (Henriques 2007b), âvibesâ or atmosphere of the sexually charged popular subculture by which the crowd (audience) appreciate each dancehall session as part of the Dancehall scene (Cooper 2004). The paper concludes that thinking though vibrating frequencies makes it easier to appreciate how audiences with no direct or inherited connection with a particular music genre can be energetically infected and affected - to form a sonic diaspora
Auteur da FĂ© - The Geopolitics of the Author
This paper examines the concept of the auteur that explores how it was always geopolitical in character, and never simply an affirmation of individual expression. Truffautâs Fahrenheit 451 is read as a theory of the auteur that foregrounds its status as gesture, rather than genius
The Color of Noise
Initially presented as a lecture in Hout Bay, South Africa, this article seeks to realize three aims. First, under the capacious heading of postcolonial sound studies, it attempts to think the articulation between racial difference and sound by probing the now common association of color and noise, for example, the âpinkâ noise routinely used as a sleep aid. Despite the existence of white and black noise, color is here attributed to signal characteristics in ways that also underscore the risks in reducing race to color. Second, responding to such risks, this article then seeks to examine a South African genealogy of the differentiation between sound and noise, a differentiation whose juridical (and thus political) instantiation draws essential and immediate attention to the figure of the neighbor, especially as the neighbor embodies a distinctly sonic nuisance. Race returns in this context as part of a spatial segregation that both âcolorsâ noise, and draws attention to a prior sonicity, the âlong screamâ of those forced apart from others under Apartheid. This sonicity emerges as a problem for all thinking of noise that grasps it (whether phenomenological or juridically) as a form of nuisance. Third, in casting itself as an example of âinvestigative poetry,â this article broaches a collective inquiry on the politics of noise (both heard and unheard) in South Africa, and invites the participation of researchers distributed over cacophonous archives who hear themselves hailed by the conceit that sound is a problem whose quality as a radiant permeation requires the indiscipline of the critical humanities for its study
NÀiden lisÀksi materiaalia on saatu mediaseurannalla.

The thesis is a qualitative research and a prediction method has also been used.
The results has obtained through the personal interviews. The results and views are also gathered from the teach-in I organised in October 2012 and from the research through media.
The aim of this study is to get a better understanding about the communal culture in Helsinki in these days. The aim is also make suggestions to the better cooperation between the organisers and Helsinki and also try to predict the future.
